Is This How We Choose To Go To Hell?

There are a lot of people who neglect God for their own convenience saying that God will forgive them “because He loves everyone and wants them to be with Him in Heaven. A loving god would never send anyone to Hell. Besides, I’m a nice person – I’m nice to people. He’ll let me in.”

I don’t think it works that way.

True, God does love everyone and He does want everyone to be with Him in heaven. The problem is that we choose to not love Him. I think it’s also true that God will never send anyone to Hell.

So there you have it – nobody goes to Hell, right?

Nope, not right. I didn’t say that nobody goes to Hell. I said that God doesn’t send anybody to Hell.

So how does someone get there? Well maybe it’s something like this…

It’s we who disregard His teachings. It’s we who blame Him for our suffering. It’s we who can’t be bothered to go to Mass. It’s we who can’t seem to find the time to pray or spend with Him. It’s we who decide what He wants for us in our lives. It’s we who make our moral decisions based on what we decide He wants us to do.

It’s we who don’t embrace Him.

We spend our lives avoiding Him, avoiding truth, because it doesn’t fit into what we want God to be.

I think that, maybe, the same thing kind of happens when we die – we have lived our lives pushing God away from us and/or trying to conform Him to what we think He should be, and when we finally get to meet him face to face, we are either completely blinded and overwhelmed by His love and cannot absorb it or we simply continue our life long habit of rejecting Him one last time.

God doesn’t send us to Hell, we repel ourselves away from Him, and there’s only one other place to go.

We have spent our lives rejecting Him and His love and now that rejection carries over into eternity…

Is that what happens? I don’t know.

But it seems logical to me…
